Nourishing Communities, Empowering Lives
Overview of Rosa's Second Harvest
Rosa’s Second Harvest is a rural food rescue and mobile market initiative of The Newberry Institute, created to bridge the gap between farm-level food waste and families facing food insecurity in Middle Georgia. At the heart of our work is the rescue of “ugly” produce—perfectly edible fruits and vegetables often discarded due to size, shape, or superficial blemishes. Rather than letting this nourishment go to waste, we recover it, preserve it in our community kitchen, and deliver it directly to households via our SNAP-enabled mobile market system.
By moving beyond the traditional pantry model, Rosa’s Second Harvest offers choice-based, dignified access to fresh food—served from a refrigerated truck that visits Hawkinsville and six neighboring rural towns. Our work doesn’t stop at food delivery. We maintain a thriving community garden for local learning and composting, and we host hands-on training in nutrition, food safety, and micro-enterprise. Every part of the program—from rescuing overlooked food to investing in local skills—is built around sustainability, equity, and collective resilience.

Rosa’s Second Harvest actively partners with local farms, producers, and markets to recover surplus but still-edible produce that would otherwise go to waste. This rescued food is sorted, preserved, and prepared for redistribution to community members.
Using a refrigerated truck, the program brings choice-based, SNAP-enabled food access directly to underserved rural communities through scheduled pop-up markets in Hawkinsville and surrounding towns.
→ Community Garden & Composting
Nearby community gardens supply additional fresh produce while serving as a site for education, volunteer engagement, and composting of unsellable food—reinforcing a circular, environmentally sustainable system.
→ Nutrition Education & Skills Training
Rosa’s Second Harvest hosts hands-on workshops in food safety, healthy meal preparation, gardening, and micro-enterprise development—empowering community members with knowledge and tools for long-term food security and wellness.
